After another unsuccessful audition, on your way out, you see another
actor emerge with the director, both smiling and shaking hands. You now
ask yourself two questions:
1) What did I do wrong?
You sent in your headshot, compiled a demo reel, chose the perfect
monologue, dressed up to the nines, and gave a passionate
performance. What missed the mark?
2) What did they do right?
From the moment you see the casting ad, you must carefully strategize
each step of the audition process, from a simple email, to researching
the project, all the way to the actual interview. You must find
something that sets you apart in order to
get the role.
AUDITION STRATEGIES Workshop
focuses on the philosophy that an actor’s presentational technique
during the audition process is just as, if not more, important as their
acting skills.
To succeed in an audition requires part talent, part selling (the
interview) and packaging (resume, headshot and reel), but not
necessarily in that order. It’s essential to get your foot in the
door FIRST, so you can show
your talent SECOND.
Things you will learn:
• BEFORE AUDITION:
Resume/Cover Letter (Too Much
or Too Little), Headshot (Am I Pretty
Enough? or Who’s That?),
Demo Reel (Sure This is Not Your
Wedding
Video?), among many other topics. Participants will learn the
essentials of putting together an effective package to catch the eyes
of the director/producer.
• DURING AUDITION:
Introduction (Sell Yourself or
Be Yourself), Breaking the Ice
(Being
Friendly or How Much is Too
Much), Monologue Choices (Hey,
STELLA! or
Yo, Adrian!) The workshop will
dissect the dos and don’ts of audition
etiquette, attitude and material choices. Mock auditions will be
conducted aiming at distinguishing yourself from others.
• AFTER AUDITION: Exit
Strategy (Should I Stay or Should I Go),
Follow-up (Persistent or
Pestering). The aftermath of auditioning is the home stretch you
can’t
afford to trip up. Participants will learn how to make a final
impression on the director/producer before they make their decision.
Participants are encouraged to prepare their portfolios (Cover Letter,
Headshots, Resumes, Demo Reels, Monologues) before the workshop.
There
will be hands-on demonstrations where 5-10 participants will
be chosen
to go through mock auditions where we will analyze their use of AUDITION STRATEGIES.
